This "E Pluribus Unum" coin is on a mission to get to Hot Springs Arkansas to my daughter Colleen Nora Villarreal (Kappel/O'Malley) This "E Pluribus Unum" coin is an interpretation of the first committee's seal proposal, made by Benson Lossing in 1856. Happy 14th Birthday Colleen, I love you! Please try and keep this real Glow-In-The-Dark coin with the its passport log book. Try and place in high traffic caches along the way to Hot Springs Arkansas. Sign and date the log book and please take a minute to make a comment here. Thanks, Michael Kappel The motto E Pluribus Unum was first proposed by the U.S. Continental Congress in 1782, for use on the Great Seal of the United States. Just as the U.S. has thirteen original colonies, E Pluribus Unum has thirteen letters in it. The term ex pluribus unum (a minor variation) dates to ancient times, where Saint Augustine uses it in his c. 397-398 Confessions E Pluribus Unum still appears on U.S. coins even though it is no longer the official national motto. That honor was given to "In God We Trust" in 1956 by an Act of Congress.

Large 3D Glow-In-The-Dark "E Pluribus Unum" Coin originally left at "DG Library Adventure Book Geocache" GC4BJH0 http://coord.info/GC4BJH0 Here is some info on the great seal... http://greatseal.com/mottoes/unum.html E pluribus unum is the motto suggested by the committee Congress appointed on July 4, 1776 to design "a seal for the United States of America." The below sketch of their design accompanied a detailed description of their idea for the new nation's official emblem. First committee's design A motto's purpose is to express the theme of a seal's imagery – especially that of the shield. The center section of this shield has six symbols for "the Countries from which these States have been peopled": the rose (England), thistle (Scotland), harp (Ireland), fleur-de-lis (France), lion (Holland), and an imperial two-headed eagle (Germany). Linked together around the shield are 13 smaller shields, each with the initials for one of the "thirteen independent States of America." On August 20, 1776, this first committee submitted their Great Seal design to Congress (including Benjamin Franklin's idea for the reverse side). Although their design was not approved (and two more committees would be appointed), their motto E Pluribus Unum was selected by Charles Thomson in 1782 when he created the final Great Seal whose centerpiece is the American bald Eagle:
